This is a slippery slope. We start with the intention of curing diseases and fixing abnormalities, then we start messing with cosmetic stuff. Hair colour, eyes, height ect. Before long the military is using it to make super soldiers. It is completely typical of humanity to turn something wonderful like this into a weapon. In Star Trek this exact thing happened and the enhanced humans ended up taking over the world. Of course this is an extreme scenario but it's not beyond the realms of fiction any more and we should be very careful. I think there should be a very clear line drawn with this that should never be crossed. Otherwise we might not ever be able to go back.

Why do you have to relate it to Star Trek, bro?
I was thinking something more like Captain America.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

At first we might get Captain America, but not everyone will be a goody two shoes like him. It doesn't take much for power to go to someone's head. One of them will get the idea in their head that they are superior and therefore should be in charge.

Perhaps, but if we stopped based on how it could be abused, I doubt we'd have many of the technologies we have today, not to mention there are plenty of civilian technologies that got their start in the military or by military funding.

I'm not saying stop. Just make sure there's a clear line we don't cross. I personally think it should be at the cosmetic stage. We have no good reason to make designer babies.

I wouldn't say cosmetics, I'd say diseases and other disabilities should probably be taken care of first. After that I'm not sure honestly what should or shouldn't be taken, I mean it's an idea, but on the other end the gun is quite frankly the greatest equalizer man has ever had, if someone is stronger, that doesn't help much if they get shot for example.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I think genetic editing should only be used if it can eradicate diseases and disabilities. Anything after that is superfluous. I'm completely against the idea of designer babies. I mean, it sort of trivialises new life doesn't it? "Your baby is now customisable!" And yeah, super soldiers, also stupid. Who's to say the baby would grow up and want to be a soldier? And it opens the door for countries to start experimenting on it's people in a sort of arms race, just using the human body.

So yeah, I agree that it's dangerous territory.

"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."

As someone that has an entirely different viewpoint, I personally don't care.

the argument that one thing (gene editing) will lead on to all those other things is a slippery slope

I said that in my opening post. But it's a plausible one. One we should be careful to avoid.

My Dear Melancholy,

Dark you beat me to it.

With technology improving we need an Iron Man. Then we can have a civil war...

On topic:
Ehh...not a fan. I like faith (well dominant genes science stuff) to determined the uniqueness of my child. Don't wanna pick myself. That's like Sims and creating your own being. I'm not a fan of certain things when we play god. It's nice to save lives, improve on them, or alter genes to prevent a disable. But legit having your baby "customized" is kinda too far. Unless its to give him the facial hair gene of the baby father.

Nah it's fine if all we use it for is fixing problems. I just don't think we will. Too many a***** in high up positions who would want to abuse it.

I can picture famous people and government using this on their kids. Like an athlete trying make his kid the next big thing.
